At Annual Meeting, San Rafael Library Foundation Introduces Transformative Plans for New Downtown Library

During the annual meeting and reception on November 13, 2023 at the B Street Community Center, the San Rafael Public Library Foundation delivered an insightful presentation recounting its transformative journey from a conception in 2015 as an ‘Ad Hoc’ subcommittee to its current standing as a Foundation, led by Gary Ragghianti as President of the Board.

The presentation delved into the Foundation’s exhaustive research efforts, outlining a comprehensive review of various strategies aimed at enhancing and expanding the Downtown San Rafael Library. It highlighted an array of potential sites explored, ranging from Pickleweed to the Northgate Mall site, Boyd Park, and numerous others. Finally, the Foundation settled on Albert Park as the best available location for the new library.

Moreover, the presentation underscored the strategic steps taken by the Board to garner support for the new library. Notably, in May of the current year, over two-thirds of San Rafael voters echoed the need for a new and expanded library, marking the strongest community support witnessed in the past decade. This significant backing sets the stage for a Citizen’s Initiative, providing California’s citizens with the opportunity to propose crucial laws and amendments independently of the Governor or Legislature.

With a target goal of acquiring 4,700 signatures by early 2024 to secure placement on the November 2024 ballot, SRPLF invites the community to donate today and sign the Petition when it is available.

Charting a New Chapter: Transformative Plans for San Rafael’s Downtown Library & Carnegie Building

Over the past few years, SRPLF extensively evaluated several possibilities for the new Downtown San Rafael Library, examining locations like Boyd Park and Albert Park. We put a special emphasis on exploring the renovation of the existing location, given the community’s attachment and regard for the Carnegie library there. Through this thorough exploration, it became evident that site of the Carnegie next to City Hall does not offer sufficient space to meet the diverse and growing needs of our community.
